Andy has a long history as a member of national and international boards in the field of continuing engineering education and continuing education. He has served on the board for the International Association for Continuing Engineering Education (IACEE), an organization launched by members of CPD who saw a need for an internationally-focused entity.
“Generating ideas” is one of Andy’s strengths and his legacy to the continuing professional development of engineers. Examples include leading the team to develop award-winning Stanford Online, the first system to use video technology to deliver academic courses on the internet and leading the effort to create the world’s first online graduate engineering degree. In addition, he led the development of the first set of online courselets in support of engineering and science curriculum areas and directed the development of “Stanford Engineering Everywhere” an initiative to provide open online courses to educators and learners around the world.
His talent for working with people is evident by the number of awards he has received. Among them are being recently selected by the United States Distance Learning Association to receive the “21st Century Best Practices Award” for Stanford’s advancements in the use of the internet to deliver graduate and professional education, appointment as a Fellow of the European Distance and E-Learning Network, the professional association for open and distance learning representing 52 countries, and induction into the Distance Learning Hall of Fame for his lifetime contributions to the field.
Andy DiPaolo exemplifies the attributes we associate with Joe Biedenbach – a talent for working with people, live life in high gear generating ideas, someone who knew how to “get things done,” had a strong belief in customer service, and whose warmth, laughter, and leadership still inspire us today.
